Fitting a German kitchen in a London period house

By Daniel Helmut Pinger, TischlermeisterUnited Kingdom

German cabinetry is precise to the millimetre. London's Victorian and Georgian houses are not. The two work well together when the planning accounts for that from the start.

Walls that are not square

We survey with a laser and record every wall's deviation. The design includes scribe panels, slightly oversized end panels that are cut on site to follow the wall, so the joint is tight even where the wall bows.

Lower-ground floors

Many London kitchens sit in a lower-ground floor with a lower ceiling. Tall units are sized to the actual ceiling height, extraction is integrated into the worktop or ceiling, and pocket doors keep the room open.

Getting it in

Narrow front steps and basement stairs decide the size of every unit. We split long runs into sections that pass through and join on site without visible seams. Parking suspensions are booked with the borough in advance.

Listed buildings

In a listed house we agree details with your architect before production: how units fix to historic walls, where services run and how original features are protected.
